KRK KNS 8400
The KNS 8400 by KRK is a studio quality headset. Stands as a tough competitor for the ATH M50x. These are recommended for professional use only for optimal performance. Not for a casual listener as it costs around $321.
The design of the KNS 8400 is very simple many won’t like its design. The earcups rotate 90-degree horizontally. Moreover, one of the earcups rotates 180-degrees vertically.
You might have seen DJs wearing headsets in such orientation. Not sure why the other doesn’t rotate vertically. The earcups are not big enough that they can hold any ear size. They fit small ears easily but you might feel discomfort if you have large ears.
These are light. No weight issue but one thing is weird. The manufacturing materials seem to be of not the quality expected for the price. But overall the headset feels to be strong enough to last years.
As usual, the headbands are made up of metal. The earcups are very comfortable but not as good as the DT 770 PRO. The earcups are memory foam in type. Furthermore, long hours of usage will warm them up.
The KNS 8400 are closed backs. At this cost, you have to get ANC in a closed back headset. So, they do feature a great ANC. Not recommended to use on a busy street. And also it is difficult to find any headphone at the same price providing such ANC.
Stating it to be reference headphone is not right. Because the bass is great but it sometimes becomes punchy. The bass is not loud, they are more on the neutral side for mid-range frequency. As you go higher on volume the lows and the mids are suppressed by this headset.
So, it performs outstanding at mid and low-frequency ranges. Furthermore, the treble is nice clean and crisp.

AKG K 240 MK II
Above we have discussed the K240 Studio. Now let’s see how the K240 MK II performs. Again these are also not cheap. A mid-range studio headset costing around $120.
These are light weighing around 240 g. So, as it is this light it contains more plastic than metal. The earcups are more plastic. However, the outer portion of the earcups is made of metal.
The cable is almost 3 meters long. But the cable quality seems to be decent not at all the best. It also comes with a coiled cable also of a decent quality.
Design & Comfort
They look similar to the K240, very much. The headbands are wide same as it is in the K240. The earcups are very comfortable. Also, they enhance the overall bass performance.
The headband as the K240 ones is self-adjusting. The headbands are not cushioned but are comfortable. It really depends upon how much cushioning you prefer.
These are semi-open headsets. So, don’t expect ANC from these as they will leak audio through them. Again they can be used with your smartphones or laptops but you won’t get enough juice out of it.
Prefered to use an amplifier for optimal performance. As it has an impedance of 55 ohms you don’t need a very powerful amplifier.
The audio delivery is great. Not natural or close to natural. But for the price you can experience such detail and clarity is very few headsets.
- These perform the best for mid-range better than some of the Beyerdynamics.
- The vocal is rendered very well with details.
- If you are a hip-hop fan then this will serve you well.
- As they are good at mid-bass.
- At high frequencies, the treble is pokey which isn’t good.
It has decent sub-bass but it could have been better. Having these on can help you to feel the artist’s emotions they are that good at vocals.

3]. Studio Headphones For Recording
• Open Back
The K240 by AKG is an affordable studio headphone that will solve your editing, mastering and mixing dilemmas. These cost around $70 way cheaper than the HD 800.
The earcups have a circumaural structure. The headphones have a nice shape. The earcups are black and have a golden strip and the logo area has a golden coating too. So, the headset has a nice premium look.
They don’t look futuristic but they have the look that most of the studio professional headsets have a very long cable, Detachable cable
Built Quality and Comfort
The K240 weighs very less. You can say it to be featherlight as you won’t feel them covering your ears. Overall, the headset has plastic to metal ratio very high.
A lot of plastic seems to have been used. Nonetheless, the headband is made up of metal which is a must. They feel to be durable.
Further, the headbands are self-adjustable.
Just wear it and it will slide until the perfect fit is established. AKG could have paid attention to the wires a bit. Not sure how good is the quality of the wire but they are thin and might break after few years of usage.
The ear pads are of decent quality. You will feel sweaty and warm after long hours of usage, not the best but comfortable.
As these are semi-open headsets don’t expect ANC. There is leakage of music but that is not a concern at all for studio professionals. Surprisingly, the mids don’t leak much but the treble leaks more through it.
If you are a bass lover then this not for you. Way less bass as compared the Beats. Let’s see how this performs at various frequency ranges.
Not very less bass. Better to say a neutral bass headphone but excellent for the price. If you are a mid lover then this is superb for you as it delivers it effortlessly.
The highs and the lows are energy packed. If you listen to music at a loud volume then this might disappoint you. As you might face treble issues at high volumes. At the same time, the treble is great at low to medium loudness.
The speciality of the K240 is that they are great for vocals and instrumentals especially guitar. Because they have a very nice reproduction of the audio that delivers every detail.
Sennheiser HD 800
The HD series of Sennheiser has been a big hit. And the success continues with the HD 800.
Being one of the immeasurable performing headphones it has taken an edge over many other premium headphones. Good news, all the HD 800’s are fully developed in Germany.
According to Sennheiser, these are crafted for performance. It has a very futuristic design which is indeed appealing.
Man, the HD 800 seems less like a headphone and more like some sci-fi movie stuff. They have a futuristic look. Moreover, each and every part of the body is designed to match utterly.
You won’t find any imbalance between the designing and crafting of these headphones. It is worthy to point out that the package is appealing too. After all, for the price you should be given perfection in everything.
The built quality of the HD 800 is excellent. The cables are very long and thick as it has to carry huge power through it. The headphone looks feel and are made up of premium materials, plastic is used though.
But according to Sennheiser, the plastic is a high-quality one, not those found usually in many headphones.
As you can see the earcups are massive any one’s ear can slip in smoothly, it is light. Yes, it weighs only 330g. Now let’s talk about the headband. Sennheiser has in all 3 patent for the HD 800.
One of them is for a multi-layered design of the headband. There is some technology behind the headbands but we will see that in the later section.
So, the band has two layers one of metal & the other of plastic, retrieve high-quality plastic. Obviously, the headband is coated with a high-quality foam for comfort.
- The HD 800 is straight engineered to be as natural as possible. The transducer used here is not your conventional transducer. Here the transducer has a ring shape, called the ring transducer. Such transducer has the control to regulate the oscillating surface, intensifying the clarity. The transducer of the HD 800 is the largest you can find in dynamic headphones, having size 56mm.
- The aluminium coil & the magnet system are of 40 mm and 42 mm each. They work according to some principle, known as Spatial Listening according to Sennheiser.
- The headbands also play a role in enhancing the overall performance. The multi-layered design attenuates vibrations of the headband. So, comfort and performance are maintained.
Essentially Natural Sound
Firstly, if you are a studio professional or ready to spend $$ then this is for you otherwise no. As we know these are open backs moreover with large earcups. Don’t expect Active Noise Cancellation from them. These are meant to be used in closed places like home, studio etc.
Not for a traveller or an explorer. They sound almost natural. What the artist wants you to listen you are getting that. However, it is very difficult to get close to natural sound but the HD 800 is very close to being close.
The pleasant sound and the delivery of detail for high ranges of frequency keeps you conscious of the music. I can say that once you wear them you will forget having anything on your ears and will continue to enjoy true music.
The MDR-750 is a headset by Sony to meet the studio requirements of the customer. It comes in two version one has an averagely sized diaphragm costing $103 & other with a large diaphragm at $255.
Design and Comfort
The MDR-7506 has a great design. It doesn’t look appealing but it has a very classy look. The earcups have an elongated design. Better described as a racetrack, parallel sideways and semicircular at the end.
There is a problem here, the earcups are elongated they are not sufficiently large. If you have large ears you will face discomfort. At the same time for listeners with small ears, they fit smoothly. The earcups have a nice range of horizontal and vertical rotation.
Furthermore, the headset is foldable almost to average fist size. This makes it super portable. Good news for you, they also come with a leather bag for carrying the headset. They are featherlight is true sense weighing around 8 ounces.
Though they come with an extra 6.5 mm jack for other power sources they are not meant for heavy studio works. As we can see it has an impedance of 24 ohms which is more than many other good headsets.
But not a high value for using amplifiers or DAP [Digital Audio Player] for it. It performs great even with your phone, laptop etc.
All closed backs have noise isolation. But the MDR-7506 has appreciable noise isolation better than many. The driver size is 40 mm and does its work perfectly. Let us see how it performs.
- Mid-ranges are clean and clear. Also, the highs are clear and detailed.
- Treble is also fabulous.
- It is tough to find any other headset at the same price to deliver such detailed vocals.
It weighs only 8 ounces. This straight indicates heavy use of plastic. Not sure how good the quality of plastic is. The headband is made up of metal and has a foam coating around it.
While expanding the headband the wires are exposed which are not good. Recommended to be careful while adjusting the length as the wire can be damaged.
The cable seems to be of great quality. Also, they are coiled and cover adequate length when stretched. The padding is made up of decent quality. They are comfortable to a great extent but not super comfortable.
Moreover, they will get warm after long hours of usage, this might be a caveat for some of you. At the price, a better-built quality can be expected by the customers.
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO
The DT 770 PRO by Beyerdynamic is an excellent performing headset for the price. These are not cheap at all. They cost around $206 but you are getting an excellent audio quality right in your house.
The overall the design of the DT 770 PRO is very appealing. They are neither embedded with attractive decor nor colour coatings. But if you are like me who like things a bit simple and subtle then these are really appealing. The ear pads have a very nice washed texture on them.
Padding is good. Moreover, the pads are detachable. So, if any damage happens to the pad you can replace it easily. The design of the headset is perfect to fit you. It sits smoothly and comfortably and gently.
Not for a casual listener. They need a compatible amplifier for the best sound experience. To deliver what the artist wants you to hear.
The earcups are made up of plastic and the Headband is of metal. They have coiled cable which is sufficiently long for you to wear and roam around as you enjoy your music. But the cables are not detachable.
The low’s are the highlight of this headset. Great Noise cancellation. Not prefered to use on busy streets. Meant to give the user professional studio quality so that you never miss any detail throughout your experience.
